Why Moss Landing Is a Sea Otter Hotspot
The southern sea otter was once hunted nearly to extinction for its extraordinarily dense fur. Today, a protected population of several thousand animals lives along the California coast, and Moss Landing sits at the heart of their range. The combination of the Elkhorn Slough's calm, food-rich waters and the protected coves around Moss Landing Harbor creates ideal habitat for these animals to rest, feed, and raise pups year-round.
Unlike whale watching, sea otter watching requires no boat and no advance booking. You can often see otters from dry land, within minutes of leaving the inn.
Where to Look
Moss Landing State Beach is your first stop. There is a protected cove near the dunes on the south side of the beach where groups of bachelor otters often gather in what biologists call rafts, meaning groups of single-sex otters resting side by side, sometimes wrapped loosely in kelp so they don't drift apart. These rafts can contain anywhere from two to over one hundred animals, and they are a genuinely remarkable sight from shore.
Jetty Beach, on the west side of Moss Landing's north harbor, is another favorite. This sheltered strip of beach is where otters come to nap, hunt, and groom in calmer water. The harbor itself is worth a slow walk too, particularly in the mornings when otters are active and feeding close to the dock.
The Elkhorn Slough is where things get truly special. The slough's calm, brackish waters host a resident population of otters that rarely leave the area. You can spot them from the banks near Kirby Park, from the trails at the Moss Landing Wildlife Area, and from the water if you book a kayak tour or an Elkhorn Slough Safari boat tour departing from Moss Landing Harbor
Getting on the Water
The best way to experience sea otters is from the water at close range. Kayak Connection and Monterey Bay Kayaks both offer guided slough tours that bring you eye-level with the otters in their natural habitat. Blue Water Ventures offers early morning kayak tours specifically designed around otter and seal watching, and Elkhorn Slough Safari has been running guided naturalist boat tours through the slough for over 30 years, departing right from Moss Landing Harbor at 7981 Moss Landing Road.
If you prefer something a little different, Monterey Bay Hydrobikes let you glide through the slough on a water bike without getting wet. It is stable, quiet, and wonderful for wildlife observation.
Tips for a Great Experience
Sea otters are present in Moss Landing year-round, though they tend to be closer to shore and easier to see during winter and spring when pup season brings young animals into the shallows. Early morning is generally the most active time for feeding behavior. Bring binoculars even for shore-based watching, and always stay at least 200 feet from any otter in the water to avoid disturbing them.
When you come back from your morning on the water, Moss Landing Cafe is a two-minute walk from the inn and is the perfect place to warm up with coffee and a hot breakfast before heading out again. We would love to help you plan your itinerary. Stop by the front desk at check-in and we will point you to the best spots for the morning.
